Well, all beauty’s an illusion. So here’s to cheating…

Hands up who’s jealous of the damsel described above?(Raises both hands). Women throughout history have gone to extreme lengths to get the much vaunted alabaster-skinned look, from Elizabeth the First and her lead-based slap to Madame de Pompadour and her arsenic skin whitener.

For those of you that don’t want to look like you’ve rolled around in a vat of gravy browning, here are 10 non-deadly ways to achieve a pale pallor. Or, at least, slightly less deadly than arsenic or lead. Or at least non-deadly to you, though hopefully fatal to the common sense of men in the immediate vicinity.

Regular sun block for pale skin
Apply sun block (of the highest SPF you can find) religiously. This is a lifesaver to many a Goth gal as you can apply all of your normal makeup over the top of it (once it’s had time to absorb).

Natural beauty - DIY skin bleach

To make this incredibly simple DIY skin bleach you will need:

a couple of lemon slices

1 cup of milk

yoghurt

flower water (optional)

Soak slices of lemon in milk for a couple of hours. Strain out the lemon and add the yoghurt to thicken. Apply this cream to your face and body for a few hours so that the bleaching action can take effect. It might be wise to test the mixture on an area of skin that isn’t your face first. If you react badly with excess burning or itching, rinse the skin bleach off. Even if you get any redness, at least the whole world won’t be in a position to learn of your mistake.

Alternatively you can cheat and stick some lemon juice in a glass of milk, then rinse your face with it in the morning.

Talcum powder - the pale skin ubercheat

The stuff that once went on babies’ bottoms now goes on your face. Use it instead of your normal face powder to create an ivory sheen. But be sparing - you don’t want to look as if you’ve tripped up in cornflower.

Clothing protects and accentuates pale skin

The more you keep skin out of the sun the less chance it has to tan, nuff said.

Black clothing will contrast more greatly with pale skin than any other colour, so stick to dark colours near areas of exposed skin, like your face.

Pale skin is contrasted by dark hair

With that in mind, you might want to dye your hair a dark shade, too. Dark doesn’t have to mean black - it can be anything from black to cool brown. However, darker hair is by no means essential - there have been plenty of cool blondes and pallorous pre-Raphaelite redheads.

Cleopatra eyes!

Your eye makeup is going to make a big difference to your skin tone. Black eyeliner is probably your best bet. It will make your eyes look bigger and more defined. People will be helplessly drawn into their dark abyssian depths. Hyponotise these people into doing the washing up.

Face lightening creams

Deep breath… this is a tricky one, as contemporary stores carry very little in the way of face lightening creasm. And I’ve never tried one myself. All I can say is research the product for ill effects as well as positive ones first, stick to the instructions religiously and don’t be tempted to overdo it; there will be results in time.

Alternatively you could fly to Japan; they have an entire section of the beauty industry designed to create ivory skin.

Make your own parasol, darling!

‘Parasol’ means ‘for the sun’ in spanish. A parasol is a great way to avoid a tan and look incredibly stylish at the same time.

*Take a look at my post below*

Cheat with foundations

Your best bet with the wily beast that is foundation is to get one a few shades lighter that your natural complexion and then powder over with talcum powder. It’s initially a little tricky, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

To whiteface or not to whiteface?

Now, onto the issue of totally white foundation, or gothic whiteface. Yes, you can wear it. And you should wear it! But if you’re going to do whiteface take the time to do it properly. It isn’t a look that most people can do on the way to work/school/soirees. And if you can? Then I’ll be your personal slave for a month if you teach me how - and then I’ll run off with all your teaspoons.

Freckle removers

They may look cute on little girls but god are they annoying when you’re trying for a pre-Raphaelite pallor or the smooth skin of a marble statue. [We love freckles! We love them! - the Eds] Here’s a means to get rid of them. You will need:

1 dram citric acid

.1 oz. glycerine

Mix them together. Apply to freckles three or four times a day.

How to get rid of a tan

You come back from a lovely holiday in the Bahamas to find you have the complexion of a coconut (or lobster). The best way of dealing with this problem is to mix:

1/2 pint new milk

1/2 oz. lemon juice

1/2 oz. white brandy

Together, boil the whole then skim it. The resulting concoction should be applied to all tanned areas each morning.

Beauty is skin deep. But if you equate pale skin with the type of beauty you’re trying to achieve - who knows? Maybe one of these methods will work for you.

-xoxoFashionista

How to make your own parasol

Get an old umbrella with a good sturdy structure. The fabric part of it only has to be in quasi good shape (that’s your pattern) make sure it’s one of the ones with the little metal caps on the end that come off. Make sure all of those are still attached too.

Take the fabric part off. Try not to tear it. Take it off gently, and cut small slits in it around the top part, if necessary to get it off. Carefully get the little metal cap things off and put them aside. You want to be able to use them later.

Pin the old top to the fabric (use something that isn’t too stretchy, or not at all). Cut the new top out carefully, leaving at least an inch around the edge for the “hem.” Where the center is, cut out the absolute smallest hole necessary to get the top thingy through, too small is better than too big.

Hem the edge so it will fit. Put it through the center thingy, sew it in if necessary (this will be a little tricky). Clean all the old fabric and glue out of the end caps (make sure your fabric isn’t so thick they won’t fit on) and presto. If you were really careful with your pining and cutting and hemming (oh my!), you should have a parasol.

But it’s actually really fun and easy to do and will fast become a favorite if you have long hair.

1. Ensure that your hair is clean and shiny. Comb and remove any tangles from your hair. If you have flyaways, use a smoothing cream of choice to settle the hair before braiding. If you don’t want to go through this, you can just brush out all the tangles.

2. Divide your hair into two large sections, straight down the middle of your hair. Decide which direction you’ll weave; you can weave from right to left or left to right, depending on whatever feels most comfortable.

3. Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the first section. Pull this strand over the first section, and add it under the second section on the other side. In other words, the strand of hair has gone over the first section and finishes under the second section.

The skinnier the strand you use, the more intricate the braid will look; it takes more effort but it looks the most effective. In general, try to use the same thickness for each strand throughout or your braid will look uneven. For a beginner, pulling it tighter helps you to learn the method properly.

The fishtail braid can be as neat or as messy as you’d like, depending on the occasion. Doing the fishtail braid while your hair is wet will give it a firmer grip, creating a more precise braid.

4. Do the same for the other side. Pull a skinny strand of hair out from the outside of the second section and over this section, then weave it under the first section. Make it as loose or as tight as you want it to be, remembering that the tighter method is easier for beginners.

5. Keep repeating the steps until you reach the end of your hair’s length.

6. Finish the fishtail braid off by tying your hair with an hair bobble or elastic. Add a cute ribbon, barrette or charm to give it some personality if you’d like!
If you feel that the fishtail is too tight, use your fingers to gently massage into the strands s little to loosen the fishtail slightly.

If your hair is really long, more can be done at this stage, such as tucking the hair into a bun, weaving it around your head or across the front, etc. If you have slightly shorter hait, just fishtail it as far as you want.

Tips:

-You can use bobby pins or hairspray to secure flyaways.

-For thicker hair, consider using thicker strands than skinnier whick you would use for thinner hair.

-For a more messy look tease your hait first then fishtail your hair.

Warnings:

-Never use standard office rubber bands in your hair; they will damage it.

-This style may not work if you have too short hair.

-With thick, frizzy or curly hair, use frizz control or hairspray to tame flyaways.

Things you will need:

-Hair tie, bow, or elastic band (best if hair tie contains no metal),

-Brush or comb,

-Medium to long hair lenght,

-Bobby pins (optional),

-Mirror (optional),

-Extra person to help (optional)

-Do not forget; the most important thing is a 7-10 inch hair.

Fashion Click: Bonnie Barton’s cozy mix of neutrals
Who:Bonnie...

Fashion Click: Bonnie Barton’s cozy mix of neutrals

Who:Bonnie Barton

Wore:Romwe Jacket, Raven denim jeans, VJ-style bag, Dolce Vita flats

Why we love it?
We never can get enough neutrals! And Bonnie’s mixing and matching of navy, camel, and red, warms both our heart and this never-ending winter. The polka dots add the perfectly precious finishing touch.

Camel+Red

Here is one of my favorite color combos: Camel and red! To me it is a classic look that never quite really goes out of style and that I never will get sick of. I’ve been wearing this bag and jacket pretty much involuntarily this whole week. I threw on this beanie in the cold and rainy NYC weather we have been having the past few days. As much as I do love gloomy weather I am definitely ready for a little bit of sunshine and warmer weather. Keyword a ‘little’ bit. Anyways, I hope you all are having a fantastic weekend!

Now here’s another celeb...

Steal Her Look: Camila Alves
